Japanese Conversation Practice with けんさん
Since I find listening input and speaking output difficult, I thought that listening to more conversational Japanese through podcasts or videos would be a way to help with this issue. I found a YouTube page that posts conversations that are compiled into a video depending on the topic. The YouTuber, けんさん, does interviews with various people, but with those interviews, makes compilations that are related to a specific topic.
The topic of conversation I watched this weekend was Future Plans. While listening to this, I was able to pick up some of the things that the guests wanted to do in the future, as well as the reasoning why. One challenging part of the listening input is when I don't realize when someone is using Katakana words. For instance, there is one guest who said he would like to go hitchhiking, but since I don't know the word for hitchhiking, I was not expecting it to have a Katakana spelling. Since I was confused while listening to his interview, I glanced at the subtitles and realized he was speaking about hitchhiking. This is just one of the challenges that I noticed I have when listening to Japanese content in general.
Overall, I think this was a great way for me to get more input than just Japanese class. I understand that I need a lot of practice, so I wanted to listen to natural Japanese conversations to get comfortable with the speed at which some individuals speak and what words they use in natural, daily conversations.
